Podcast

This is probably the reason you’re here, but I’ll explain just in case. Started in November of 2007, The Mana Pool is a podcast for all the things that casual Magic players might enjoy. We talk about new cards, old cards, decks we’ve played, Commander/EDH, drafting, tournaments we attend, flavor, tribal, basically anything we can think of. We answer rules questions for listeners. We have segments like Out of the Deck Box (showing off our decks), Story Circle (building a deck on the fly live on the air), Magic Mad Libs (just what it sounds like), Mortal Instinct Fighter Calibur Vs (a flavorful random creature tournament fight), and several others that show up from time to time. Whenever we all get together, we record a live episode of us playing games, which listeners seem to enjoy because it gives more insight into who we are rather than because of the games themselves. Hope you enjoy!

Episode 584 – The Original Gold Set

The dorks are back! We’re doing a Mythic Conscription for the original Gold set, Invasion! This was before they really figured out how to do a set focused on multicolored well, so there’s some bizarre stuff in here. The gold cards are, by and large, REALLY good. The monocolored stuff is…well it’s definitely monocolored. And yes, we did talk about Fact or Fiction. A couple times.

There was an excellent Sam Quiz at the beginning too, don’t forget that! She’s getting much better at describing card art.

Seriously though, everyone be safe out there in the midst of this global pandemic. Wash your hands.

Episode 583 – Just Talking Dragons

You like dragons, right? Of course you like dragons! Who doesn’t like dragons? Dragons are quite possibly the biggest and most well known…thing to come out of fantasy. Ever. They’re all over the place these days, from video games to a mega popular HBO series.

And we love dragons too! And since this is a Magic podcast, we’re actually just going to talk about dragons in Magic. Like, the cards. Not a history lesson, not a biology lesson, none of that. We’re just looking back at some of our favorite dragon cards, our least favorite dragon cards, dragon art that spoke to us, disappointing dragons, anything we can think of really. Feel free to let us know what are your favorite Magic dragons and let us know if there are any other creature types we should just talk about!

Episode 582 – Everything Changed When the Kami Nation Attacked

The dorks are back, now that Chewie is no longer a walking corpse! And what are we doing for our triumphant return? We’re doing another installment of There’s No Plane Like Home, where we take a look at one of the planes of Magic to determine if it would be a good place to live. We’ll take a look at the different locations of Kamigawa, the different groups and races that live in those locations, and of course the constant threat of getting murdered by random Kami.

But hey, there are Ninja! That means nowhere else is nearly as cool as Kamigawa, right?

Episode 581 – Urza’s Salad

The dorks are finishing up their Mythic Conscription of the Urza block with the final set, Urza’s Destiny! As is usually the case with older sets, some colors have plenty of possible mythics, and some just…don’t. Old sets are kind of inconsistent like that.

Also, Chewie blows his own mind with a pair of clever ways to remember the order of the Urza block sets. Oh, and there’s a brief discussion of hippos. And the horrible weather we were having. And probably a few other things.

Episode 580 – So Crisp and Unsanctioned

Out of nowhere, Unsanctioned was revealed on Tuesday. Unsanctioned is the latest silver-bordered product from WotC, but it’s not a full new Un set. It’s a boxed set that features five decks full of some of the greatest hits of silver-bordered cards along with a few new cards in each color. The dorks go in-depth on all the new cards and drop a few honorable mentions of the reprints.

During the final thoughts we ended up going off on a few topics. Brian & Sam’s Prerelease experience, streaming Skyrim, and Dirk’s hang up about the Star Wars Expanded Universe. Just good old random nonsense!

In other news, Brian upgraded his computer to Windows 10. That means he can use his headset mic, which is why he sounds drastically different now.
