Episode 494 – Friendly Bannings

friendly bannings

Has your playgroup ever issued a ban on certain cards or combinations of cards? Have you ever made the decision to stop playing something because, while it might have been effective, it just wasn’t FUN? That’s what the dorks are discussing this week with our own experiences playing lots of Magic as a group over the years.

Also WotC has revealed the structure of MTG Arena’s in-game economy and card acquisition, so we spent some time going over all that. Seems workable, so we can’t wait to see how it feels!

They didn’t say anything at all about the Ferocidon banning being based on the win rate of the individual card. They posted win % against the field, pre and post board, but they didn’t factor in any specific cards, I doubt their data is specific enough for that.

My play group didn’t make any friendly bannings, but we did individually decide to frequently play cards to counter powerful decks. Just about every deck ran Scar to beat Stuffy Doll, for example. Leyline of the Void was also very common, as graveyard decks were very popular in my play group. There are a few deck, like my Uril, the Miststalker EDH deck, that I refuse to play due to how unfun they can make games. Sorry, my Uril has Runes of the Deus and Shield of the Oversoul, good luck doing anything about it. It’s also the reason I refuse to play boggles in modern.

We did make a rule for our Emperor games where you had to pick your deck first, then randomly assign the seating. Too many times someone that knew they were going to be the Emperor would simply choose a combo deck that no one could disrupt. The random seating meant that you needed to pick a more well-rounded deck, or risk getting aggro’ed out.
