Episode 450 – We Have Returned! (MTG RPG)

It is time! Karim, Alaric, and The Angel are back to track down the mysteries of Trivester! Not because we want to, but because we can’t freakin’ leave the plane and we’d really rather be somewhere else. Plus apparently the dice have decided that we’re going to have a nice easy time of it, and that is bothering Brian, our Game Master. Apparently he wanted us to suffer a bit more.

In case you’re completely lost, Brian created this MTG RPG and we periodically play it on the show. If you’d like to hear the previous installments, here are some links to get you caught up!

We’ve seen enough of the rest of the game that I’m pretty enthusiastic about it, but combat is such a key part of most RPGs that I’m slightly frustrated at how all the combats so far have been minor scraps that have (and should have been) settled in one round. We haven’t gotten to see a long, drawn out fight that lets us see spells and mana sources in action. It’s a major component of the system that has so far gone completely unexplored.

We also haven’t seen anything about leveling up, improving your character or learning new spells. I feel that as a piece of entertainment media, Heirs to Trivester is fantastic, I’m enjoying it alot. But as a demo and pre-alpha test for Brian’s Magic RPG, I’m not very impressed. I feel like Brian’s just kind of telling a (good) story rather than showing off how his game works. Which again, not a bad thing, just kind of disappointing in some ways.

Guess I’ll just have to wait for more episodes and hope I get to see more of that stuff. XD
