First we have to talk about Ajani’s upcoming induction into the Gatewatch, since it was revealed today and all. We’re not sure how close we got when we made up an Oath for Ajani, feel free to let us know!
After that we’re looking forward to Aether Revolt! And we’re speculating WILDLY! We’re trying to figure out what exactly we’d like to see in the new set. We’re starting with the mechanics of Kaladesh and trying to determine how we’d like to see them (if at all) evolve when the Revolt happens. Between Fabricate, Vehicles, Energy, and even wilder speculation about other cards or mechanics we’ve got a lot of stuff to kick around. Let us know what you’d like to see in Aether Revolt!

Brian’s idea for referencing energy without using it made me think of Glissa Sunseeker
Maybe something like this
Energy Naturalize XG
Instant
Choose target Artifact or Enchantment. You gain an amount of Energy equal to X, then destroy that permanent if its Converted Mana Cost is equal to the amount of Energy you have.
If you wanted to make it able to kill stuff that costs less than the Energy you have you I could see making it cost X1G and letting it spend your Energy for some small effect, like gaining life.
As for Affinity for Artifacts, I don’t see that ever happening again as a set mechanic in Standard. Mark Rosewater has said R&D thought about using it in Scars block and were reasonably sure they could without breaking things. They decided against it, though, because they were too scared that something would slip through the cracks. *cough*Treasure Cruise*cough*Dig Through Time*cough*Embiggen*cough*Zombie Fish*cough*Banana King*cough*
Wow, someone must have delved a lot of dust, because I’m coughing a lot here.
I would like to add that wizards revealed (Or at least I’m assuming that as I learned of it from the Mana Source, and they don’t do unofficial spoilers) a card known as Battle At the Bridge, which uses a mechanic called Improvise, which is convoke for artifacts. That is as close to affinity as we are ever going to get most likely.
For the vehicles, I want to see vehicles with “tribal” crew costs, where only a certain creature type can crew the vehicle.
for example:
Voltron
artifact-vehicle
1
trample
crew 10
this card can only be crewed by vehicle creatures
20/20
as for energy, I would like to see cards that let you set up rube-goldberg type board states, where you have a ton of cards that cheaply do extremely specific things, that can combine with other cards to do powerful things. like a card that grants any creature trample, and another card that destroys creatures with trample
or more creatures that grant energy to be used on their effects later, to increase your options on what effect to use.
here’s another cool card idea:
The Incredible Gremlin
creature-gremlin
R
when this card enters the battlefield, remove all energy counters from you, put that many +1/+1 counters on The Incredible Gremlin.
gremlin smash!
1/1
possible return mechanics: fading (on the Aetherborn, because their life span is literally the length of a hamster), proliferate, raid/ battalion, prowl (on the rebels to encourage attacking), cipher(well, not really), overload.
