Episode 424 – Rise of the Eldrazi, Part 4

On this episode we’re spending the entire time discussing the big Emrakul reveal for Eldritch Moon. We go into detail about our reactions so everyone understands exactly what we’re disappointed about and why. We really like the three cards they revealed though! We touched on a few other things, and you can find links to those things below!

Seriously, I’m sure the set’s gonna be as good as usual, possibly better. It’s purely a story thing. There’s nothing that can be done about it now, but we wanted to voice our concerns.

And don’t worry, we’ll have more RPG episodes coming soon.

Honestly, I didn’t understand why anyone would be so annoyed that it was Emrakul when I heard people complaining, given that it made sense to me narratively. Then I saw this episode’s title, and remembered how disappointed I was with BFZ and OGW. Now I see the light…’rakul.

the good news: according to the mother ship

This was always going to be the plan with Emrakul (admittedly form a glorified internal fan fiction website) so this wasn’t laziness on their part. Although I agree on waiting a few more blocks.

if anything, you can blame them for setting up false expectations. according to Mark Rosewater, (not gonna search through 20-50 tumblr pages to give the source) Original Innastrad blew the whole Gothic Horror wad, so design felt that there wasn’t enough left over to do a true return to Innastrad. this was the only way we were going back, no matter how perfect it was.

The biggest problem is that Magic isn’t an RPG, or a book series, its a collectible card game. Innastrad is a strong, flavorful plane… that Magic can’t really take advantage of. Rosewater has said on multiple occasions that Magic can really only do environmental conflicts. That’s why you get stories of invading machine monsters, temporal disasters, giant plane eating pseudo-gods, and planswalkers turning into Greek gods.

Its hard to play with a beautiful, intricate plane when the smallest scale of conflict you can get is… planar wide

In the weeks leading up to the reveal, most of the opinions I had heard already agreed that it was Emrakul, so I guess I wasn’t incredibly disappointed simply because it had been “priced in” already. Certainly agree with Brian that the Eldritch Moon anthology/story wasn’t the strongest, though. Similarly, I didn’t think the teaser video was great as a reveal of Emrakul, but it worked fantastically as a Liliana piece.

I agree, Liliana was totally awesome in that trailer.
