Episode 423 – Beginning Our Journey (MTG RPG)

It is time! We’re finally getting started on the Magic RPG that Brian cooked up! We created our characters back in Episode 407, so if you haven’t listened to that you might consider doing that first. Only the first hour is character creation if that helps.

We had a good time on our initial outing as Alaric, Karim, and The Angel, getting sucked out of the Blind Eternities and into a strange new world. Now if only I could find a sword…

Be sure to let us know what you think! Bear in mind this is our first time actually playing Brian’s game, so go easy on us. Actually it’s Brian’s first time as GM too. Actually, only Mike has done any tabletop RPGing more than once. So we’re basically all new at this. Be kind and give us some feedback!

I’m really enjoying this and looking forward to getting my teeth into the system once Brian finally releases it! I know the “lol Karim fails” meme is going to be a thing, but I genuinely hope he doesn’t, because one member of the party failing constantly can legit get the party killed (I speak from personal experience). And the plane seems pretty exciting, so looking forward to more of that.

As for suggestions, Brian, don’t be afraid to narrate/summarize more or “break character” because with first time players, there’s a lot of stuff they won’t remember or will break by accident, so you shouldn’t be afraid to be pretty hands on, explaining things in plain terms rather than staying in character. Also, make sure to never give Chewie a sword. Just keep showing him swords and then having them get destroyed, stolen or simply disappear. Give him literally every other weapon possible, just never a sword. ;-D

And once you do eventually release your system into the wild (or if you’re looking for suggestions on mechanical issues) a good place to go is the Giant in the Playground forums. They’re a great place for new GMs as well as people working on homebrew systems. There are a lot of really nice people there who will be more than happy to help you hammer out any kinks, especially since you’ve got a pretty solid system developed in a property that a lot of people who play RPGs enjoy.

Holy crap Brian! Yes it’s just the beginning, but this story is awesome so far. I’m getting a real feel for this kinda creepy place, like I’m there. Super creative and well described. Also our merry band of Plains Walkers are super sweet! I’m a feared for Karim (spell?), if The Angel ever gets her sword…those taps to the back of the head could become leathal.
Gonna go search the episodes to find more of this!
You guys are awesome, keep up the fine work!
