Episode 417 – The Dark Times

To break up the Oaths a bit and to give us time to talk about some of the other stuff that’s happened, we’re doing something different this week. First off Mike & Brian recount their experiences at SCG States (while completely glossing over the fondue).

Then it’s time for another Mythic Conscription, where we go through a pre-Mythic set and try to determine what might have been Mythic if such a thing existed. Because it shares some thematic similarities to Innistrad (and because it’s so small) we went with The Dark. Pickings are slim, but the set is actually really neat and features some of the earliest versions of things we’re seeing in modern times!

And of course we can’t ignore some of the big news that’s happened recently. There’s the Pro Tour, the Platinum pay cut and following apology, and the judge lawsuit to talk about. That makes the episode title an unfortunate double entendre, but oh well.

Is Book of Rass too boring to be mythic? At the very least a colorless Yawgmoth’s Bargain like this should be a rare.

Greed already existed at that point, and Book of Rass is basically just a colorless version of that. The relationship between certain game resources still wasn’t very well understood at the time, but in my opinion these cards are perfectly fine and not really in the Mythic territory.

As for the Book’s actual rarity, it was U2 in The Dark, which means the rarity is up to interpretation. Gatherer counts it as Uncommon, but some other resources (MagicCards.info, etc.) consider it Rare.

Ah OK. I must be biased, having witnessed the bargain deck trample over other historical standard decks in Randy Buehler’s Gauntlet of Greatness (which might be more of an Urza’s Saga thing than a Bargain thing).

Well, Yawgmoth’s Bargain also costs 0 mana and one less life to activate so… 😉

Wow… I somehow missed that entirely. That would make a small difference wouldn’t it.
