Episode 414 – Shadows Over Innistrad Prerelease Field Recordings

The dorks are live from the SOI Prerelease at Lucky’s Card Shop in Greensboro NC! Mike, Brian, and Chewie are there to play with some creepy new cards, and we have the handy digital recorder so you guys get our live thoughts as we have them! We’re joined on occasion by Chris, a local listener who frequents Lucky’s, and Sexy Jarod, who is sexy. Like damn. Just for some flavor there’s some talk about The Beast, Chewie’s new computer, Final Fantasy Record Keeper, and the French version of Thundercats. We can’t get through an entire episode without some tangents!

Be sure to let us know how your prerelease went!

So, my pre-release was lackluster. I went 1-4 :/ Granted… two of those should have been draws, but no one wants a draw so I gave my opponents the win. I LOVED my deck though. Esper with Drogskol Cavalry and Westvale Abbey as my win cons plus a Geralf’s Messenger (promo).

What I found the best about the pre-release was I went in hoping to hit the promo Jace lottery again. So I open my box, and for those that don’t know/realize, the inside of the box is cut so that you can see the mana cost of the promo first. Well, I saw 3UU and started to freak out… then I realized it was another 5-drop blue mythic (oh darn XD). So close… yet so far…

I do have to give special mention to the release day draft I did at FNM. P1P1 Olivia. So I went all in RB aggro. My curve topped at 4 for 2 Hulking Devils (originally thought they were just big dumb creatures, but they are REALLY good when Olivia gives them +1/+1 and haste).

I dominate rounds 1 and 2. Round 3 I lose game 1, having one of my madness creatures countered and exiled.

Now, NORMALLY a creature is exiled until the end of the game… unless you’re me… and you shuffle up for game 2, and forget to put that exiled card back in your library -_-. I don’t realize it until I am 2 turns away from winning. I call the judge, and they leave it up to my opponent whether we keep going or it’s a game loss. Game loss… :/ *sigh* Not even mad at my opponent. Mad at myself. At least I still got the Nahiri from the rare draft at the end.

Ouch, that’s rough man. But yay Nahiri, right?

        Oh hell yeah!

I would have taken her over the Olivia anyway.

I did a two-headed giant prerelease with a friend. In just the packs I opened, I got two Startled Awake, so my buddy and I decided screw it, we’re going all in on the winning by mill plan. I ended up running a U/B control deck and my buddy ran a R/W deck filled with madness and delirium, plus our two promos which were Avacyn’s Judgment and Declaration in Stone. We went 3-0 out of the 8 teams that showed up. Each game was won with us milling out one player on the opposing team (usually the person milling themselves to enable delirium or drawing multiple cards off of clues). We won 5 packs each and pulled a ton of fun commander rares (which is what my buddy and I usually play). This format seems as deep as the previous Innistrad without the Invisible Stalker + Equipment and other hexproof bullish*t, though the Transofming Mist Vampire gave us some trouble in game 3.
