Episode 409 – Stream of Consciousness

This episode is a weird one. Dirk is on vacation, unbeknownst to us. We thought it was next week. The big Shadows countdown reveal was lame, so that didn’t take up much of the show. We didn’t have terribly much planned for this episode other than a few loose ideas and taking Mike’s Hedron Alignment deck Out of the Deck Box.

Luckily, we turned complaining about the Wizards website into a pretty good conversation. Out of the Deck Box led organically into several good discussions about how and why we play Magic. The Eternal Masters announcement led to a rambling rant/talk about the Reserved List and its implications. And then the final thoughts were rambling and out there as usual. So let us know what you think about…just any of that!

On the topic of fun play groups and healthy locals, the shop I go to is TERRRRRRRRIBLE when it comes to prize support (as in, there are no packs awarded for draft. Just a rare redraft in order of placement). But the people there are just awesome, and are the type where my weird decks* actually can actually compete.

Brian, glad you mentioned The Magicians. I’ve been watching every week and also describe it to friends as “grown-up Harry Potter,” though that hardly does it justice. In the same vein, I think Quentin is purposely made to be unsympathetic, to a degree, simply to play against that Harry-Potter-type. Similarly, The Magicians answers the question: What if Dumbledore had absolutely no idea what the hell was going on? That’s The Magicians.

Also, I have to give a golf clap to Wizards. I just built a Brago EDH deck which I’ve been really happy with, so I was super excited when they made the initial Conspiracy reveal. Now imagine the sounds of a giant balloon slowly deflating; that was me when Brago done got stabbed. Wizards absolutely punk’d me, and it was glorious.

@Brian If you enjoy the show, I’d highly recommend reading the trilogy The Magicians is based on. And yeah, Quentin is purposefully made to be a less than stellar character so he has plenty of room to grow as a person. The books get quite a bit darker than the show and the first two are kinda depressing, but the series as a whole was excellent.
