Episode 384 – Mercadian Mythics

It’s time for another Mythic Conscription here on The Mana Pool! We’re going through Mercadian Masques and trying (accent on trying) to find the rares that might possibly have been mythics if there was such a thing back then. We had some trouble this time around. Masques block was the beginning of a period of powering down, since the last block was the stupidly overpowered Urza block.

After that we take a quick look at the recently-revealed decklists for the Zendikar Vs Eldrazi Duel Decks for the sole purpose of checking out the new cards! The handful of new cards show off a mess of new AND returning mechanics! Check them out, they’re pretty awesome!

Here comes the hodgepodge of comments:

First of all Chewie: while I agree that Magistrate’s Scepter is not broken on it’s own, it is one of the only purely colorless ways to take an extra turn, and based around the time and the set it was in, I don’t see how it could be anything but a mythic if they had done them then.

Mike: I wish you had a twitter or some other thing to follow, because I would love to hear more about the music you like and listen to. As an avid music lover myself, the little glimpses we get are not enough! Also I absolutely love when you’re on the Flavor Cast episodes of Card Advantage (I’m a huge vorthos and love the history of the game too!)

Dirk: This is a little late, but congrats on the baby and the move!

Brian: Uh, I got nothing for you honestly. But keep interrupting Mike, as that’ always makes me chuckle!

And Chewie again: So I had an idea I tweeted at you, but I figure I could go more in depth here for an idea you could make videos with on Magic Duels. So yeah, the archetype deck builder isn’t bad, it’s horrendous. I’ve used it pretty regularly to get my daily gold, but it’s a chore more than anything. I always use the daily refresh when I have one to see if I can get something else instead. But worse than it just not being much fun, it’s also really bad for new players, as it doesn’t teach them how to build a decent deck. Mine never suggest removal until the last couple cards ever, no matter the color combination. So here’s my thought: You could make some videos by opening a couple packs of cards, then build around the rares/uncommons, and give newer players a much better idea about how to build a good deck, then play a few games to show how they work, and even teach better timing tricks than the tutorials give I’m sure. It’s just a thought, but it could be similar to your area decks until they hopefully give some new play types and story modes. Just a thought.

Keep up the great work guys, you always lighten up this girl’s day!

Purely colorless or not, it’s still an especially terrible piece of crap card, and I really hope that they wouldn’t waste a mythic slot on it.

As for your Duels idea, I’m still not sure there’s enough meat on there to be worth trying. But the next time I open packs I’ll see what it gives me and see how that might work.

So on this episode you mention that for the kickstarters you are cutting off the early release episodes after December. I backed the kickstarter at the $85 level because I love your show and I still listen to it today on a weekly basis.
The issue I have is that I still have not received any of my swag. Is it safe to assume that I should receive my swag before you cut us off in December? If not I’m just giving you a heads up that at least for me this will be a big time feel bad and will most likely impact my view of the show.
