Episode 382 – Making Magic Mainstream

After an unexpected hiatus last week, most of the dorks are back with a vengeance this week! Dirk is unforunately unable to join us, but we’ve got a replacement that is very much suited to the topic at hand. Chris Lansdell, former podcasting whore, is with us to talk coverage. Magic coverage has been a thing for a long time, and it’s been a fairly regular thing for a pretty good amount of time. But what would it take to get Magic coverage on mainstream sports stations? We’re tackling that discussion and all the tangential nonsense that goes with it!

There are several bits of news to cover first, and you’ll find all the links below! And don’t forget to follow Chris on Twitter @lansdellicious and check out his articles on SCG!

I can definitely confirm the price jump for the fetch lands. The day of MaRo’s post, I sold a Misty Rainforest on Cardshark for $30, a price which I had set about a year ago. Today the low price there is $60. I guess I could bemoan the fact that I lost out on $30, but instead I look at it this way: This is $30 I probably wouldn’t have made save for MaRo creating a demand for it. So I guess I owe him a commission on the sale? Anyway, I don’t expect these lands’ long-term value to stay that high, so ultimately, my “losses” weren’t so bad.

So, this is tangentially related, but I still think it’s worth sharing.. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1538285440/cardsports-the-ccg-network

This sounds good and all, but the problem I have is that these guys have come out of nowhere. There are no indications in the description that these guys have any experience or the capability to actually pull any of this off. So while the idea sounds AWESOME, I’m not gonna just toss money at some randos who claim they can do it and expect me to take it on faith :/

I’ve really enjoyed this episode. The talk about League of Legends being able to qualify as a sport was right up my alley because I’ve written a paper on that exact subject. Sorry to hear a severe misconception about the game by Chewie (or at least a disagreement upon the meaning of the term) that LoL is ‘pay to win’, which it is not at all. There are no ingame powerboosts for sale in any way. Playable characters are for sale yes, though they are ALL able to be aquired by normal play without paying real money. Most of the real-money-only purchases are for cosmetic purposes and convinience.
