Episode 365 – Stronghold: Very Weird

This episode begins with a discussion of the new Commander rules change that eliminates tucking and bouncing of Commanders. The dorks are split for and against this particular change, let us know how you feel about it!

Next up is a Mythic Conscription for the next set in the Tempest block – Stronghold! This is a seriously strange set, as each of us had trouble actually finding ten mythics! But the discussion is really interesting and entertaining. Let us know what you think should or should not have been mythic!

    Great discussion on the new tuck rule. I’m (mildly) for the rules change, but for a different reason than I’ve heard expressed elsewhere. To me, the ability to tuck always rubbed me the wrong way from a Melvin perspective. For the sake of rules consistency, it didn’t make sense to me why tucking worked as a way to get rid of a general, while exiling and destroying did not. I get that there’s game balance issues, but from a design perspective, tucking seemed to be a weirdly inelegant feature of the format.

    To put it another way, let’s pretend the command zone didn’t exist. If a commander were straight-up exiled (Swords to Plowshares, say), it would be next to impossible to ever get your commander back. On the other end of the spectrum, if your commander simply died, there’d be many, many ways (reanimation, graveyard recursion, etc.) to get your commander back. Tucking, to me, sits somewhere in between those opposites, with the use of tutors and, indirectly, card draw. If you were designing the format from scratch, why would you allow tucking (with a medium array of workarounds/responses) to exist, while exiling (with no workarounds) and dying (with many) would not?

    Anyway, I’m for the rules change, but not necessarily gung-ho about it. My playgroup seems to be willing to keep tucking around, and since its pretty rare in our meta anyway, I don’t mind one way or the other, as long as it’s agreed to before the game starts. I certainly feel for those players that are vehemently opposed to the new rule just because their playgroup needs tucking to keep some griefer commander builds in check.
