Episode 337 – Exiled! (Series Premiere)

Welcome to the series premiere of Exiled! on The Mana Pool.  Conceived and hosted by our own Brian Baker, Exiled! may or may not…borrow…some ideas from the Food Network show Chopped!  But surely not, because that doesn’t happen anywhere ever.

The idea is that the Judge gives the competitors three cards that they must use in their decks.  The competitors can then choose a card that only they can use in their deck, potentially hamstringing their fellow deckbuilders.  After a rushed 10 minute deckbuilding session, the decks are presented to the judge.  He then determines which deck is the least impressive, and that deckbuilder leaves the competition and joins the judging team.  There may or may not be additional rules in subsequent rounds.  We brought in our old buddy Bill Bloodworth (@SqueeGoblnNabob) to help us out with this too!

Be sure to let us know what you think, because we had a LOT of fun with this and would love to do this again if you are interested!

And don’t worry, we’ll hit all the big news and stuff next week!

For the first pack, my mind also went to Through the breach, but I’m super greedy and want to spice it onto a lava spike to trigger bloodthirst.

Great show. I would love to hear more in the future. Also, we need another word for Brian to use instead of appreciate. 😛

Haha, very true, but if I hadn’t read your comment before listening to the show I might not have noticed. =P

Instead of “appreciate” he could just remark “I see what you did thar…”

What? It’s not April! What is this?? XD

Okay, in all seriousness though, this was fun, but a bit hard to follow. It might help if you included the decklists here, or in the show notes, or both. I’d like to see it again – heck, I’d like to play this game!

This episode was great! It was a lot of fun trying to play along (I was brainstorming some sort of Grand Melee/Blood Artist/Forbidden Orchard monstrosity for the final challenge), but I can totally see this being an occasional thing: everyone put in a lot of work, to the competitors being under pressure, to Brian having to fill the air while everyone was brewing, and to Chewie for all of the extra editing. Great job everyone!

This was awesome, and Bill nearly made me suffocate from laughing with Level 2 Judge Test. If you do this again in the future, which I hope you do, you’re going to need lots of guest hosts because no one in their right minds would agree to do it twice.

I totally wanted someone to add Godhead of Awe to the second deck.

This was amazing. In each round (except probably the last one) I kept thinking through what I’d do and how to make the cards work together. I feel like pressing the random card button a few times until I get some cards that hit on a theme, then challenging myself with this very thing. It’s a really good mental exercise, and I feel like it’d help me get better at learning names and effects of old cards. And it’s entertaining to listen to you guys get stressed out and roasted in the same way it is to watch it on Chopped!

Additionally, one or more of you might find Magic Assistant useful for this. That’s what I use to build decks and probably what I’d use here:

Awesome episode, essentially a combative story circle. I appreciate that despite the fact this is a reality competition show, nobody actually uttered the phrase, “I’m not here to make friends.”

I decided to challenge myself with the final round’s restrictions. Here’s what I came up with after 10 minutes:

    Camouflage X1
    Siren’s Call X1
    Sorrow’s Path X1
    Steamflogger Boss X1
    Command Tower X1
    Relentless Rats X55

Then I threw myself out of a fifth-floor window.

So I heard the rules and hit pause. Usedmy break time to play along. I Named my one card, waitted for the others to name theirs and then got busy. Going to make my coworker play the game too.

browbeat / fury hellkite / figure of destiny
my call was braids of fire because that’s what I play with any red activation cost cards.
CARDS: enlightened tutor, / vedalken orroery (1) / paradox haze (3) / comet storm (1) / flame wave invoker (3) / rite of flame / aether membrane

    ROUND 2:
ephrar / repulse / porphry nodes
my choice was white mane lion (always run this with ephara) so I feel it superscedes the letter restriction
CARDS: godhead of awe (in my porphory deck at home) glorious anthem / twin cast (2) / can’t have magusof the disk because you are evil / austere command / negate / scourglass (2) / land — 2 colors, appropriate shocks, buddies, feth, fast, cycling, crap outta time

    Camoflaughe / sorrow’s path / sirens call
This one was a doozy and i finally settled on my chosen card being reconissance. On theme and all, but only ran 1 in the deck.
CARDS: needed a way for the sorrow’s path to not matter so i searched up good old fungusaur, he had no boddies like him unless i searched be the gatherer text and that gave me fungus sliver…. I checked RUG slivers for refrences to damage and found Lymph slivers… went with these card choices:

lymph sliver / muscle sliver / sinew sliver / fungus sliver / manaweft sliver / gemhide sliver / which gave me enough mana for 3 copies brainstorm.

LAND – sliver hive, caver of souls, ancient ziggurat , reflecting pool, blue vivid land BOOM

I definitely want to see links to tappedout for these decks so because playing them against each other would be –interesting. Great job guys I really enjoyed this one.
