Episode 289 – Vault Boy Turns Twenty

ftv 20

On this episode, the dorks take a nice long look at From the Vault: Twenty.  We’re taking a long look at each card in it and explaining (to the best of our ability anyway) why it deserves to be there.  Of course, with an in-depth discussion of each card, this topic went on longer than we thought it would.  So after that we did some quickfire news, taking a look at the Hall of Fame, Worlds, and the new Holiday Gift Box before calling it an episode.  Hope everyone enjoys!

I’ve not cared about ftv products for a while since the idea of getting one for anything bordering on reasonable is a joke. My only problem with ftv;20 is it’s the only official product to celebrate the 20th anniversary. That bothers me to no end. As a casual player since Ice Age, I really love the history of the game (for my birthday my girlfriend kickstarted the artbook), and would love to have this product, but there’s no way I could ever get one. I’m the player who’s never bought a box, who gets fat packs when I can afford one. I haven’t even got a single pack of modern masters since everywhere I’ve seen them has been at least twice msrp/ thought about saving up for a set when I thought maybe I could get one for 2 to 3 x msrp (something close to what most ftvs go for at first) but this one is currently going for an average of $200, 5x msrp. It wouldn’t bother me so much not if they didn’t post an msrp, but if there was something else, anything else official to celebrate the 20th anniversary of this game we love. This feels like a slap in the face to fans who care but aren’t able to throw money at everything.

I strongly agree with you that something just feels wrong about how muted the 20th anniversary response seems to be. I remember there being special tournament events and an extra-special advertising campaign back around the 10th anniversary. I can’t remember if there were any special products, but that was something WotC wasn’t doing very often at the time. Anyway, with Magic currently bigger and more popular than it’s ever been before this might even be a prime opportunity to do something that would give it more “mainstream” awareness.

It’s great to hear you’re going to get the art book. I’m eagerly awaiting my copy, too. There’s going to be lots of neat stuff in there.

Rules question for Mike: Do you have to shuffle your library twice as it reads on Green Sun’s Zenith? I played it once against a Cosi’s Trickster and we agreed to give it two counters.

Actually, yes. It looks weird to me too, but the two instances of the instruction to shuffle haven’t been edited out of the current Oracle text. One of the rules notes in Gatherer has this to say about it: “In most cases, if you own Green Sun’s Zenith and cast it, you’ll shuffle your library twice. In practice, shuffling once is sufficient, but effects that care about you shuffling your library (like Psychogenic Probe, for example) will see that you’ve shuffled twice.”

The traditional gift for the 20th anniversary is China, which means they should have re-released Portal Three Kingdoms. 25th is the silver, or more likely, Sliver anniversary.

I am in favor of this. Wizards should make this happen now!
