Episode 286 – The Post-Pre-Release Episode Pre-Pre-Release Episode

This episode is going to sound a little silly.  You see, we recorded a bunch of stuff at the M14 Prerelease, but I wanted to do some more.  So we recorded a “quick” Old vs. New to append to the end and have a full episode.  Of course, we’re pretty much incapable of doing anything quickly, so we ended up with an hour and a half of Golgari discussion.  You know how we do it.

So, rather than release a 3 hour episode, I decided to release them separately.  But because the prerelease stuff was a live episode, I needed to actually listen to it, and the weekend was full of surprise familial visits, so I didn’t have time to do so.  So I released them in reverse order to keep from delaying the release of an episode any further!  Look for the prerelease episode soon!

The stretch starting at minute 59 regarding Putrefy tripped me out. Editing error? Do you guys do ‘takes’? I thought this was unscripted! This isn’t real!! NONE OF THIS IS REAL!!!!!

I actually just built a Rot Farm Skeleton deck, mostly because the card suggested a couple of strategies, aggression and graveyard manipulation/recursion, that were outside my usual comfort zone. What I’ve found is that the Skeleton’s pseudo-Dredge, as well as the actual Dredge cards I included, are really powerful mechanics but were also more difficult to play than I realized. Sure, more often than not, I would want to dredge a Stinkweed imp or Golgari Thug but in doing so, I was also keeping myself from drawing lands which I found hurt me further into the game. Overall, the deck is fun, but not very effective yet. I think you’re right that the Skeleton itself isn’t great, but a couple copies of Brawn in the deck, which often get dredged right into the graveyard anyway, make the Skeleton a lot more terrifying to deal with each turn. I may also bite the bullet and spring for Concordant Crossroads to really ramp up the aggression.

All of the problems with not drawing lands go right out the window if you add 2-3 copies of Life from the Loam. Because it gets 3 lands at a time, you don’t have to recur it very frequently at all to keep yourself on track.
