Episode 282 – Old vs. New: Hippie Edition

Old vs New Selesnya

After a brief discussion about being the biggest idiot ever, the dorks head right into the Magic 2014 cards they showed the freakin’ night after we recorded the last episode. It’s just one per color, so it doesn’t take that long.  ZOMG Fish Illusion!

Then Mike and Brian tell us all about a PTQ they went to at Atomic Empire in Durham North Carolina. It’s a great shop, you should check it out.  If that’s not funny to you, you need to listen to more Cluze. Just sayin’.  Non-spoiler: Mike finished a game in such an amazing way that I can’t even bring myself to type it here. Just listen.

After a musical break, it’s time for the topic Chewie has been trying to do for a month now.  We’re taking a look at the various key elements of the guilds from the original Ravnica block and comparing them to the same elements in Return to Ravnica in an effort to determine which one is just, well, better.  This episode we’re focusing on the hippies of the Selesnya guild.  So what’s better, old weed-smoking hippies or new hemp-wearing hippies?  Let us know what you think!

I can see the new US Army recruiting posters now: Dirk in an Uncle Sam outfit, text beneath reading “I don’t need you!”

I believe three cards weren’t mentioned which would have somewhat skewed the balance for the old Ravnica: Fist of Ironwood, Faith’s Fetters and Doubling Season.

The first one was a cheap way to get two saproling tokens and, it being a common, was an easy inclusion in some limited decks. Faith’s Fetters vs Trostani Judgement. Sure, one exiles and populate; however, the other one was used as an example for the new Planeswalker rule. Just saying! :) Finally, Doubling Season… Who needs populate when you can double your tokens/counters right away? :)

Of course, these cards didn’t have the Selesnya watermark and Faith’s Fetters could be a Boros or Azorius card and Doubling Season can be Simic (given the +1/+1 counter theme). However, you can’t deny Fist of Ironwood is a Selesnya card (old Simic, Golgari or Gruul were in the token mechanics)!
