Episode 280 – New Legendary Masters That Are…Modern?

Modern Masters Tarmogoyf

The dorks are back! After inadvertantly taking a couple of weeks off, we are back with a vengeance.  Of course, there’s plenty of big news that has popped up in our absence.  Since Brian loves Maze’s End so much, we had to talk about the Maze’s End deck that did so well at Pro Tour: Dragon’s Maze. There was a big preview of the rules update that is coming up in Magic 2014. Legend rules, playing lands, sideboards…all kinds of stuff.  We cover it all.

Since we last recorded, they’ve started previewing cards from Modern Masters.  So of course, we’re covering the cards that Wizards has previewed.  At this time this was recorded, only 3 days of previews had gone by, so there aren’t terribly many just yet. Just wait for next episode though!

Penny Arcade just came out with a timely comic that I think illustrates Chewie’s (and my) slight discomfort with the new Legend rule from a flavor perspective:

As a vorthos from way back in Ice Age, the legends rule doesn’t bother me in the slightest. It might have back then, but honestly ever since the first time they printed the same character with two different names (Crovax) we’ve learned that the idea is they’re from different parts in their time line. And since the idea is that you’re summoning creatures from ideas/memories (which is why it was summon originally) that it’s easy enough to understand that you’re calling forth the idea of that person to fight for you.

But the Planeswalker rule is one that really bothers me on a flavor level. Since every version of a planeswalker is subject to each other, the idea is much more you’re calling in a favor from a friend, almost like another player. So it made sense that if you called in a favor from jace, and then your opponent called him too, that he’d leave, since he owed you both basically. They’re not supposed to be ideas of planeswalkers, they’re supposed to be that actual planeswalker, there to help for a little bit. So that from a flavor perspective is much more wrong than the legends, in my opinion.

Yeah, I’m on the same page with you for both of those points. I understand that the Planeswalker rule was also changed because they wanted it to stay similar to the Legend rule to reduce confusion, but that may not be necessary. Since we recorded I’ve had a chance to think about it some more and now I think it might have been fine to just let Planeswalkers be Planeswalkers, not “like Legends, except different”.

Can you please let us in the know about what you were talking about in your final thought Chewie? I’m sorely out of date on magic news and you’ve done and gotten me curious.
