Episode 250 – The State of the Game

State of the Game

Here we are at another milestone episode for The Mana Pool!  It’s been almost five years since we started this little show (that’s another milestone for next month), and it’s been a blast!  Lots of things have changed over the years, most notably our lineup.  Originally, the show was going to be Chewie and whoever he could track down to record with him any given week.  As we went on, the lineup settled into the four dorks that you all know and love, but we did have one other regular host back in the day.  He was responsible for MANY of the early topics for the show when we had no idea what to talk about.  He was our resident noob and minority.  Of course I’m talking about none other than Squanto!

Well I tracked him down (gave him a call) and convinced him (asked once) to come back for the big two-five-oh.  Since he’s still a Magic player (thanks to Duels of the Planeswalkers on the iPad), he agreed!  He’s taking an outsider’s viewpoint on the game, picking our brains on the current state of the game and where it’s heading.  We touch on tournaments, Magic Online, Duels of the Planeswalkers, the secondary market, media coverage, and really anything else we could think to include!  It was a really great discussion and we’re all really happy to present it to you as our 250th episode!

But that’s not all!  We also took a look at the Banned & Restricted List update that we missed a couple weeks ago (weird, I know).  We give you the rundown on the Return to Ravnica Event Decks, which were just released last week.  We go back to Magic nonsense to trash on the various Magic novels and thank goodness that they decided to just not release one rather than releasing straight crap.

Of course, we go off topic a few times, Chewie is tormented by a couple flies in his room, Brian’s sister is hot, Mike’s beard is epic, and Dirk is replaced with Robot Dirk.  Basically everything’s about where it should be.  Thanks for listening, and here’s to another 250!

I like Grimoire of the Dead. It’s good in my Sedris commander deck.

Speaking of all the different formats. I wish they had a common/uncommon only standard construction format. Make me use the cards that just sit in my case and never get used.

When I first got going, I used this ‘format’ to build about a dozen decks for the express purpose of introducing people to the game. It’s really great for that because it’s generally (not always) quite balanced. Now that I have a larger play group and they’re going out and getting their own cards, I’ve had to put a bit more ‘umph’ (read: rares) in my decks. This really is a fun and flexible way to build, though, imho.

speaking of trading money for digital item, Diablo 3 has its auction house that you can buy items from other players. if you find enough gold in the game, you can buy stuff. but if you want, you can pay real money via paypal, and buy items in the game. also, Solforge, is going to be digital only and you will buy boosters for that as well.

I’ve never gone back to listen to the old Mana Pools, so this is the first time I’m hearing from Squanto, and I have to say, I’m really enjoying his drawl. In fact, please transcribe all future podcasts and forward them to Squanto so he can read your parts for you. I’m afraid next to his dulcet tones, you all sound like nails scratching a chalkboard. Okay, Robot Dirk we’ll keep around for Jungle Rat Rob’s techno remixes, but the rest of you…

Yay Squanto! This is especially cool to me, because I just recently went back and listened to the first 30-odd episodes.

I haven’t read any Magic novels, and it disappoints me that (according to Reliable Sources) they’re somewhat lame. To me, the scope of Magic lore is so big and so generally awesome that, as a writer, I can’t understand why someone given the opportunity wouldn’t try to spin the best Magic tale they could. Heck, I’d love to take a crack at it myself, but I don’t think Wizards would be interested in a backwoods Canadian with an overactive imagination who’s never actually published anything. lol!
