Episode 229 – Mike’s Demonic Defects

Mike's Demon ProblemsMike’s face courtesy of Jars

We begin by taking a quick look at the Avacyn Restored Event Decks, in all their glorious whatever-it-is. After that, we have a riveting discussion about what happens when you cast Eaten by Spiders on Avacyn. Another listener-inspired topic that we tackled is a simple one: What was the first card you ever really coveted? This leads us to all kinds of nostalgia and manages to infiltrate the main topic of the episode.

Main topic you say? Well AVR has lots of shiny new angels and a fair number of new demons, but what about the old guard? Both have been around since the first printing of Magic, but what are we dealing with here? What have these two types looked like throughout the history of the game? We’ll discuss some of the ancient creatures of each type and throw out plenty of personal experiences with them too of course.

Two things should become pretty obvious from this discussion. First, Brian doesn’t actually know the names of any angels or demons in the game of Magic. And second, demons DO NOT get along with Mike, so much so that we named the episode after this phenomenon. You’re gonna love these horrible, horrible demonic bad beats stories all the more when you realize that these ALL come from the demons that Mike is playing WITH, not against!

Yeah, I can drop by to pick up the prize. Incidentally, I may need to put in a reimbursement for about 236 gallons of gasoline. Also for some slight… water damage to my car.

FYI, that final stinger for The Avengers, if internet scuttlebutt is to be believed, was shot, ridiculously, just a week before the US premiere. Since it was released a week earlier in the rest of the world, we got to see the scene, but others might not until the DVD release.

Remember when I used to comment on Magic cards? Yeah, neither do I.

Wheres my The Avengers video game remake. I used to play the crap out of the old SNES game. Earned my best thumb calluses off of that game.

Lol, how come your event decks link take me to the pitchofthewoo Facebook page? I’m guessing you really wanted me to see that instead of the deck lists.

Got it. Thanks for saying something.

Oops! Stupid thing must not have copied like I thought it did. Sorry about that, and thanks for pointing it out so Mike could fix it. And thanks Mike for fixing it!

Firs card coveted. It’s been a long time, so I’m digging back and covering my bases with a few. I remember that Royal Assassin was huge. Personally, the first one I remember chasing after was Land Equilibrium. I am apparently a horrible human being.

My first card coveted was Bringer of the Blue Dawn. My first deck ever was a (5 color, duh) Sunburst deck and my friend opened the Blue Bringer in a pack and damn him he wouldn’t trade it to me for anything. I had no idea what spoilers were or anything at that time so when he opened it and showed it to me I am pretty sure my jaw dropped at the idea that a card like that existed.

To be fair, I at the same time saw Bringer of the Black Dawn and coveted that pretty hard too, but that was in a store and not in my friend’s binder so I couldn’t get mad about them not wanting to trade it to me.

Also because the art looks like he just squatted down and took a huge steaming dump.
