Episode 224 – Plants and Other Things

Utopia Tree

We begin this episode with a discussion of Avacyn, the first reveal from Avacyn Restored, and boy is she something!  From there we move into the double-faced tokens that were given away at FNM (sorry about the delay) and the fansite toolkit available from Wizards, featuring some nifty images for you to use whether you have a site or not.  Also, a big shoutout to Jeffrey Lombaro, who is @MuttZippy on Twitter, for buying us all lunch the last time we all got together to play Magic!  He’s a sweetheart of a guy and he’s doing giveaways and stuff on Twitter, so go follow him!

And since it’s Springtime, Brian thought we should talk about those things that make people absolutely miserable and unable to see or breathe, plants!  Yes there are plenty of plants in Magic, we by the end of the show we’ll have talked about almost all of them!  We even asked Twitter for some favorite plant creatures, which we promptly made fun of.  Okay, not all of them, just the ones that deserved it.  But if you’ve ever wanted to know about the Plant creature type in Magic, look no further!  Be sure to pack Benadryl and some tissues!

As always another good episode that made me laugh. you should have made Dirk drive the whole show on plants, just cause of his green fetish. :)

I have an iPod Touch & the Decked Builder apps and they’re great because they’re some of the few Magic apps that you can play/use without a wi-fi connection. I often do a couple drafts on my lunch break and its great!!

Lol. Chewie: “I hate all the listeners except my own.”

Along with Tony, I expected a Dirk driven episode here. It was still great as always. I’m glad you guys brought up Decked Builder, I haven’t downloaded it for my iPhone (wink, wink) because I’d heard WOTC pretty much killed other MTG apps. Glad to hear it’s not true!

iPhone owner here, also I want to participate in the give-away.

I think the SCIENCE-d spell isn’t that bad.

Let’s take Mind’s Desire, it may not be as cost intensive as Dragon Storm, but it’s Mind’s Desire.
Okay, so let’s say you hit the Ripple paydirt and get 3 more Mind’s Desire after you cast the first copy.
4 copies go on the stack, with the original one being the last one to be resolved.
    Resolve the first Mind’s Desire.
    -Ripple won’t do anything.
-Cacade into your free spell, cast it
-Resolve your first Mind’s Desire 2 times.
Storm count of 5 (2MDs+their free spell+the cascade spell?)
    Second MDx5
    -Ripple
    -Cascade 5 times
    -Resolve your second MD x10, 11, 12, 13, 14, times
-Succesfully deck yourself, win the game, be a horrible person.

I think I messed up the stack order, oracle wording, everything, damn.

Well, let’s just hope that I was intelligent enough.

Have you guys seen vexing devil? It is super silly. Also I would love a free app.

    • April 11, 2012 at 11:54 am | Permalink

Yeah, I saw the preview article on tcgplayer earlier today. The #1 reason I don’t like Furnace Scamp and won’t play with it is all the BS jumping through hoops that has to be done to make it work properly, so I’m glad Vexing Devil has the good sense to avoid all that.

And because I had too many codes, I picked two. You won as well!

I think Mike got the Storm/Cascade/Ripple question wrong. He’s right that you can order the triggers however one wants, but the number of copies from the storm trigger is locked in once the storm spell is cast because it looks for spells cast before the storm spell is cast, not spells cast before the storm trigger resolves.

Also, Ripple-ing a Mind’s Desire just sounds dirty.

    • April 11, 2012 at 12:03 pm | Permalink

You’re right. I misremembered the Storm rules as “each other spell cast this turn” instead of “each other spell cast before it this turn”. The difference usually wouldn’t matter, except in the case of more spells getting cast while the Storm trigger is on the stack, which unfortunately is exactly what’s happening here. I’ll try to remember to say something on the air next time we record.

    Awe Jam!

    It’s peanut butter jelly time!

Glad to hear your back to your normal sense.

I haven’t tried the deckbuilder app. I did however buy the deck drafter app for my iPad, which is awesome for practicing drafts.

Thanks for everything btw love the show and all your contributions that your podcasts have given back to the magic community. Kudos sir, Kudos

I believe you are wrong on Avacyn being destroyed by tragic slip, she would just become a -5/-5 until the end of the turn If morbid was on as she is indestructible as well, also I would like the decked builder code.

    • April 12, 2012 at 9:36 am | Permalink

The state based action of putting a creature with 0 or less toughness into the graveyard isn’t a “destroy” effect, so indestructible doesn’t protect against it. -X/-X effects are one of the handful of reliable ways to deal with indestructible creatures.

Good to know, especially since I am building a deck with tragic slip in it. I just started playing 6 weeks ago so I am still learning all the ways to get around indestructible and other win condition effects. Great podcast by the way, even though you guys don’t talk much about standard cards.

Carnivorous Plant will always have a special place in my heart, because, back in the day, Animate Wall was a thing.

Deckbuilder seems like a thing worth having.

Avacyn is OK, though relatively unkind to green. Sigarda is the one I am not happy with., and will likely stay that way unless the last angel (the one with WWB in the cost) is especially egregius. On the opther hand, I really want to play Tamiyo with Zombie Infestation.

This message not sent from my iPhone… because I do not have one. No free thing for me, please. With all my dissing, I expect Mike wouldn’t want me winning anyway.

Guys, I love the show. There really aren’t any other shows that so broadly celebrate the game. You’ve got competent analysis and discussion without the deck-centricism, disdain for bad cards, and awful “celebrity” talk of other podcasts. Please keep it up.

I don’t have an ipad or iphone.
    Downside: No Decked Builder
Upside: Apple isn’t tracking my every movement and the preserved brain of Steve Jobs cannot penetrate my thoughts.
