Episode 215 – DKA Prerelease and Mailbag

Dark Ascension Expansion SymbolWell, it’s the week after the prerelease, so you know what that means, right?  We’ve got to tell you all about how we did!  Find out who did well, who didn’t do well, and how the webmaster Scott did in his first tournament ever!

But of course, prerelease episodes are more than just Sealed tourney reports.  We also took the second half of the show to run through some of the listener mail that needs to be read on-air.  Rules questions, prerelease stories, and general hilarity.  Interspersed throughout the episode are rants and discussions of various things.  These things include lame intro packs, a good game of EDH at Lucky’s, Chewie not playing Thalia, Columbia House and BMG, and this one highly obnoxious guy who seems to run through the whole account of the prerelease.  We hope you enjoy!

Gotta love any episode featuring Dirk “The Greenest Man Alive, Moral Compass of the Group, and Official Spokesman for Snorg Tees”.

I had a few cringeworthy moments listening to this episode regarding card evaluation for limited, especially from Mike, advocating Chalice of Life, a bad lifegain card, but leaving out Flayer of the Hatebound from an aggressive deck begging for a bomb and some end-game reach.
I think you were overthinking the Flayer. Even with only 2 pyreheart wolves to trigger it other than itself it seems worth it. It’s 6 mana yes, but As a curve topper for an aggressive deck it does a bunch of work:

    1) If they block it it’l probably take a guy along with it, dome them for 5 or kill another dude (basically you get to cast a morbidised brimstone volley). And then, when the dust settles, you’ve got a 5/3 ready to roll out again.
    2) If they don’t block, well, then you were attacking, probably in a good position, and you are doming them for 4.
    3) If you did not attack, you just stabilised the ground threatening removal or 5 to the face.

Also, building ‘sub-optimal’ 44 card decks finaly paid off huh? Well good for you… ;)

But please don’t take offence Mike. I enjoyed your prerelease story and it seems you eventually got to the better deck. I too fell into the blue-seems-awesome trap and misbuild the first 2 rounds before I switched blue for a red-based stompy deck, quite the same way you did.

Regarding the mailbag stuff, I don’t care that much for reading it no, but these episodes full of ‘meh’ rules questions get rather tiresome as well. If it’s an option, could you consider cherry picking the more interesting ones?

As a final note, have I been missing the madlibs somehow or are they kinda gone?

You’re totally right about the Flayer. Even if he was never on the battlefield at the same time as a Wolf, he’s still a creature plus a lava axe plus another creature. I ditched him from consideration when I decided to not go Black/Red, since that potential build had more undying in it, but I should have thought about it more closely.

Regarding the Chalice, I’m sticking to my position. I won several games in NPH-related limited on the back of Pristine Talisman, and it wasn’t because of the mana. Getting extra turns is really good, even if it takes a while to build up to them, and this card has an alternate feature built in for when you really don’t need the extra life.

We did read a few too many rules emails that repeated each other and/or weren’t that interesting to begin with. We’ll try to be more judicious about that in the future.

I’d say I’m about 25/50/25 on the rules questions. For 25%, I could answer them confidently. 50% I probably could answer correctly even if I couldn’t necessarily quote the rule. And for 25% of them, Mike may as well be speaking a foreign language while he answers them on the podcast.

That said, they don’t take overly long to read, so I don’t necessarily mind hearing the easy ones. It is a casual Magic podcast, after all. So until someone starts an ultra-noob-cast, why not? What would an ultra-noob-cast consist of, I wonder? Muppets? I don’t think that’d come across on an audio medium. You’re probably right. I should stop talking to myself now. You’re probably right.
