Episode 205 – Would Solid Snake Have Shroud?

Solid Snake TokenOn this episode of The Mana Pool, we’re talking video games!  Reminiscing, really.  But because we’re actually a Magic podcast, we’re gonna try to bring it back to Magic as often as possible.  What could the different video game genres bring to Magic?  What about the various characters and worlds that video games have given us?  And the question that Brian used to pitch this idea to me: Would Solid Snake have shroud?  I liked it so much I made it the title of this episode!

After that, we attempted to knock out some of the listener emails that have been piling up over the last month.  Rules questions, congratulations on hitting 200 (oops), and assorted other topics come up for discussion, so don’t miss it!  You never know, you might learn something.

Damnit, now I’ll have to come up with cards for Assassin’s Creed(s), Left 4 Dead(s), (the original) Prince of Persia trilogy and whatever other nonsense I can come up with.

To Mike, Brian and anyone else who’s saddened by the lack of video games they’ve played recently. Play Portal or Portal 2, either one really. They’re great games, they’re tightly packed wholes instead of stuff you’ll play for ever and ever and ever and the co-op in Portal 2 is definitely worth checking out as well.

      THE CAKE IS A LIE!!!!!

      • November 25, 2011 at 10:31 am | Permalink

I love that the Portal cake thing has spread. In ‘Splosion Man, the achievement for finding the cake on every level is called “Not a Portal Reference”. 😀

I despise how the Portal cake thing became “I made a reference to a popular video game! It’s just like telling a joke! Aren’t I being hilarious?”

Wait, are you implying that referencing a popular video game is not hilarious?

@Mike, just because you are sick of game references does not mean others are not….your welcome to your opinion, but remember not everyone shares that opinion. Just saying

It’s not that he doesn’t like game references. It’s that for some reason the whole Portal cake thing turned into a substitute for real humor, leading the person who said it to feel smug and self-satisfied. And that sucks. Just sayin.

The reason I offered my opinion at all was because of the fact that we are all entitled to them. I didn’t think sharing about such a small thing would offend anybody’s sensibilities, but I guess I should be more mindful of that in the future.

In my opinion the cake is a lie.

I sort of got a little bit of an inspiration for a set while you guys were talking about tower defense games. Well, in fact it was more of a brain wander, but I had the thought that fortresses and towers and whatnot in Magic are sometimes represented as nonbasic lands, and that gave me an idea for a Magic set.

Essentially the set would consist of a LOT of nonbasic lands, at all different rarities. The way the set would play would primarily be a bunch of cool interactions between nonbasic lands. There might also be a a new mechanic called ‘populate’ abilities on the lands, which would would basically be: ‘tap X target creatures you control: do something cool’. The ‘do something cool’ part might be creating tokens (as in the case of a necropolis or woodland fortress), dealing damage (like if a whole fortress was built around a huge cannon or crossbow), or preventing combat damage this turn (a really heavily defended mountain castle).

Something like this might have been done in a previous set…I’m only really familiar with sets as far back as Zendikar. Figured something like this would be fun, though!

I have a really pipe-dreamy idea about bringing either Demon’s Souls’ or Dark Souls’ difficultly into Magic. But I think that it will remain a pipe-dream since making Magic harder is quite difficult in itself, layers and all.

I challenge Chewie to play Dark Souls.

This was pretty entertaining, I would love to see the Assassin’s Creed games be put into cards.

Chewie, you were correct I am in fact from New Zealand

As far as the ‘Swing with a million squirrels’ banner goes, I forget it is a Cardshark banner, and never use it to get to Cardshark, although I would if I remembered.

To generate more clicks on the banner I suggest art using Chandra/Liliana/both and… Olive Oil

Yes. I agree with that. We need to put some Get Right on that.
