Episode #187 – Guest, Interrupted (and M12)

Amphin CutthroatWe are joined this episode by one Robert Martin, also known as The Beme. You might know him as the interviewer from The Men of Magic, or maybe from the Hardcast, or maybe even the suddenly-defunct Mana Screwed podcast (go listen to their episodes, dash it all!). He also pops up on Monday Night Magic sometimes! But today, he’s here with us!

At least, he starts out here with us. Due to circumstances beyond his control, he had to leave us before we actually got to the meat of the episode. He did stick around long enough to give us his take on the new Chandra and Garruk though, and those are the important ones. Before he left, we were reading listener mail and determining the best way to tell our listeners to RTFC. Ah, like that.

But after that, we took a nice long look at the full set of Magic 2012, and I’m pretty sure we like it. I mean, it sure sounds like we do. Also, Dirk is calling it! Amphin Cutthroat is heralding the introduction of Salamanders in Innistrad! HA!

I’d like to apologize to everyone expecting something removal-related for this appropriately-numbered episode. In all honesty, we had forgotten that this one was going to be 187. We prostrate ourselves before you and humbly beg forgiveness.

Great show, it was a shame Robert couldn’t have stuck around for longer, I look forward to your future episode with him!

    As for my M12 thoughts:
Gideon’s Avenger = Tauren Mauler in white
Grand Abolisher – I think you guys hit the nail on the head with this guy. He is super powerful, and can see him seeing play around the kitchen table and possibly on the tournament tables as well. Definitely underrated by most atm.
Jace’s Archivist – My discard deck is super happy.
Chandra – Only one coloured mana symbol on a planeswalker looks wrong… probably because it is, she is going to be hot!
Chandra’s Phoenix – This feels like something that should have existed for a long time. It gives multiplayer burn decks some reach, and the haste + flying combo will probably “Suprise! Your dead!” a few people.
Dungrove Elder – They left off trample *sigh* at least he is splashable… oh wait… nevermind.
Garruk – He is good but in many of my decks I don’t think he will fit. The untapping lands ability of Garruk is so crucial, especially since it allows you to jump from 4 to 7 mana. Unfortunately outside of EDH this guy doesnt stand up to the precedent his Wildspeaking ancestor has set.
Jade Mage – It doesn’t tap! This guy is great.
Buried Ruin – My Glissa, the Traitor EDH is salivating for this, especially when you can play Crucible of Worlds, which this can bring back! ZOMG C-C-C-COMBO!

Hey Dorks! Great episode as always. M12 intro packs were announced today: http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/arcana/754

Have you noticed that Wizards always, ALWAYS, manages to mis-spell and typo the hell out of this page?? Somehow, in every intro pack announcement page I can remember, they mis-space card names or in this case leave the L off of Serra Ange, plus a whole slew of mistakes in the “flavor” texts for the packs. I do a couple of blog posts for my company and if I were as consistently sloppy as WOTC, I doubt I’d have that responsibility anymore or even a job. Let’s see company-man Brian defend that one, ha!! Rant over.

I’ve also been stupefied many times at the weird stuff that’s able to make it out the door on the website, especially for product announcements. Does no one preview the page in-browser before publishing to check the formatting?

No defense from me this time. Company-man me was beaten bloody by English-major me when I read this yesterday. It just seems to get worse the longer it goes on, and I was actually getting mad reading it.

Arachnus Spinner seems like a great card. It blocks Titans and doesn’t afraid of anything. And I’m actually serious, a U/G concecrated Sphinx and Arachnus Spinner deck seems awesome. Arachnus Web is excellent at stopping titans (if you got the spinner)

Replacement-Eric needs to get on the show again (Were they seperated at birth? They almost sound as the same guy to my ears, The Podcast Escort and the Podcast Bleep seems like a good title)
