Fix That Deck! – Fumiko the Lowblood

fumiko Fix That Deck! Fumiko the LowbloodEvery deck starts with a plan, but sometimes our natural inclination to be massive screw-ups gets the best of us.  We could have started with a pretty great list, but a series of many small tweaks and changes over a period of time have ruined something fundamental that was making the deck work, or the deck could have just been bad to begin with, and we never figured out what the problems were.  Either way, there often comes a time when a deck just gets laughably bad and the builder needs to take action to fix that, and that could mean anything from subtle adjustments here and there to tearing it down and starting all over again.  I don’t know if “Fix That Deck!” will become a regular feature here, but I do know it’s a common enough experience among all players and deckbuilders that it has some potential.

The Set-Up
When I first got into the Commander format (still known as EDH at the time), I decided to go in relatively hard.  My very first deck was a Scion of the Ur-Dragon build, focused on rolling up with the namesake as often as possible and casting cool dragons when he was otherwise indisposed.  The format was a blast, and I looked forward to building my next deck, waiting for inspiration to strike me.  …continue reading, “Fix That Deck! – Fumiko the Lowblood”

Brian’s Old School Custom Set – The Rest

Brian%20Other Brians Old School Custom Set The Rest

In the fall of 2004 between Mirrodin block and Kamigawa block, Brian tried his hand at set design with a set of 150 cards.  Other than updating to use modern templating and keywords, these are exactly as Brian created them.  It’s a look back at Brian’s take on old school set design.  Chewie and Mike added some commentary just for good measure. You can also read the White, Blue, Black, Red, and Green cards.  We hope you enjoy this trip back as much as we do!

Finally, we’ve got the artifact, multicolor, and land cards.  Each and every artifact (except Goblin Prototype, who is just weird) is essentially based around a pre-existing card, not necessarily an artifact.  Can you guess all of them?  The common  land cards are probably too good; New Benalia is proof of that.  Nevertheless, scry always had a lot of potential to me in a limited setting, and I thought the lands were a way to give each player access to library manipulation regardless of color.  I was always curious as to where they would fit in a draft pick order.  Frozen Plane was another attempt at a card with constructed applications.  All of the multicolor cards were fun to design, but the rares were especially so.  Spirit of Rage is particularly vicious; good thing I’ve never been attacked by one.  Hope you enjoyed the set.  Let me know what you think of it, and thanks for reading!

Episode 213 – Rant Over (DKA Preview 2)

Episode 213 Rant Over (DKA Preview 2)We are joined this week by Robert Martin, also known as The Beme.  You might recognize him from The Men of Magic interviews.  On this episode, we’re covering all the Dark Ascension previews that had been shown when we recorded.  And let me tell you, there are some doozies this week.  And not just Sorin, either.

Interspersed throughout the card discussions are a variety of tangents.  We’ll talk about expensive Magic merchandise, jerks on forums, jerks playing Commander, dragons on Innistrad, money gouging and crooks, the Magic Twitter community, and a certain professional player that I had to interact with later that night.  He’s not a bad guy it turns out, I just severely disagree with one of his opinions.  But still…screw him.

60CC – Scars are Sexy

kulrath%20knight 60CC Scars are SexyWelcome to another edition of the 60 Card Challenge!  This is a series of articles where I (Chewie, in case you missed the link up there that says “by Chewie”) discuss my previous inability to have 60 card decks.  Since I play almost exclusively multiplayer, I felt that I could get away with having more cards in my deck because I usually had more time to draw out of any problems.  Well that’s just sloppy.  So a long time ago, I started going through all my decks, determined to get them all down to 60 cards.  While I was at it, I kept a record of any changes I made to them, whether it involved getting them down to 60 or not.  In fact, I still keep track of changes I make so I can include them in these articles.  I decided to start every deck with 22 lands (I know it doesn’t seem like enough but I needed a baseline from which to start, and we are talking multiplayer casual here) and go from there.  At the end, I’ll finish up with any lessons I might have learned about the deck, casual deckbuilding in general, or even myself as a player.  Now, on to this edition’s deck!

The Deck
I don’t know about you guys, but I really loved the Shadowmoor side of Lorwyn.  I mean it, it was awesome.  I loved the way it was a twisted image of Lorwyn.  I loved the insane things you could do with all the hybrid mana.  And I really loved Wither and Persist along with the running gag of -1/-1 counters.  When I saw Kulrath Knight I very nearly pooped myself, I’m not gonna lie.  What?  I’m a grown man, shut up.

Anyway.  I thought it was great that I could instantly pacify an opponent’s creature just by giving it a -1/-1 counter.  That just seemed like way too much fun, so I proceeded to build a deck around this whole theme.  At first, basically everything came from Shadowmoor, since it was the latest block and where the counter theme was strongest.  Here’s the deck, before I move on.

Episode 212 – Dark Ascension Preview 1

Episode 212 Dark Ascension Preview 1We’ve got the first of the Dark Ascension previews for you on this episode!  Of course, Sorin popped up after we recorded, so we’ll talk about him next episode.  We do have the Zombie Apocalypse though, which is pretty freakin’ sweet.  Because of when this was recorded, we’re really only talking about the first few days’ worth, so we were able to go a little more in-depth than usual.

But no matter how in-depth we get, two days of cards do not a full episode make!  But we didn’t have time to go full-on into another topic, so a listener suggestion came to the rescue!  The question was “what’s your favorite combo that you run in one of your decks?”  So we all dug through our decks and came up with the combos we love.  Except for Chewie, who brought every combo in his decks.  Don’t worry, he shoots more for synergy in his decks, so he only has a few.  It gives a little glance to the way the dorks build decks.
